Opportunities
These are just a few of the current opportunities for volunteers in the
local area. For further details of any of these please contact The Volunteer
Centre on 01789 294514.
Stratford upon Avon Stroke Support Group
About 15 - 20 members of our busy and active support group meet on alternate
Monday afternoons for advice, support and companionship. We are currently
extending the support we can offer and volunteers are needed for a variety of
roles including:
- Qualified alternative therapists to provide therapies such as massage,
acupuncture and aromatherapy
- An advisor to assist with information for people with stroke who are
preparing to return to work
- A person to teach simple computer skills such as email and accessing the
internet to people with stroke to enable them to stay in contact with others
- A website designer / editor to design, set up and maintain a website
- A fundraising co-ordinator to arrange collections and / or events to
raise funds for the group
Springfield Mind
Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles including:
- A walk leader to take groups of people out for a short walk on Thursday
afternoons from the Wellbeing Exchange in Drayton Avenue
- A female volunteer to assist a service user socially for trips to do
clothes and make up shopping as well as journeys for example visiting the
optician
- A volunteer to work at the allotment in Alcester, initially to clear it
and then maintain it and hopefully in the long term to assist service users
to gain skills in this area
- Ladies to volunteer at the Women's Group which is held on Fridays
between 10am and 2pm to offer support and also to assist at the pampering
sessions - particular skills that would be welcomed are complementary
therapies, manicures and pedicures
Back and 4th transport - Minibus drivers
This transport initiative aims to serve those locally who cannot
access transport via the conventional means. The role involves working with and
caring for people of all ages and people with special needs. Full training will
be given
Applicants need to be:
- aged between 25 and 70
- have spare time in the evenings, weekends and daytime
- enjoy driving
- like visiting interesting places
- enjoy working with people of all ages
Victim Support
As a volunteer with Victim Support you will receive training and
supervision, meet new people and have the satisfaction of learning to deal with
issues you may not have experienced before. Working with victims of crime will
also help you develop skills and qualities, which will be useful in other areas
of your life.
Some volunteers work several hours per week, while others offer occasional help.
Volunteer visitors can work during the day, or in the evenings or at weekends.
Court volunteers need to be free to work during the day for at least 2 full days
a month.
All Victim Support and Witness Service volunteers receive support and
supervision from the co-ordinator of the local Victim Support Scheme or Witness
Service.
The role of the volunteer can be a demanding and challenging one so if you think
it is about sitting with someone over a cup of tea then this particular area of
volunteering is not for you. We look for volunteers who are understanding and
good listeners and who can get on with people of all ages, cultures and
backgrounds. No previous experience of this kind of work is necessary.
Shakespeare Hospice - Traveller's Ease
Volunteers will offer transport and social support to patients
receiving treatment for cancer at Coventry or Warwick Hospital. This is more
than a driver's role and so a comprehensive training package will be offered to
suitable candidates. All expenses for each trip to either hospital will be paid.
Volunteers will need to have their own car which has current insurance and MOT
where applicable. They will need to be supportive and understanding and a good
listener.
Girlguiding UK
Volunteers are needed as leaders and helpers for Guides (10 - 14
years), Brownies (7 - 10) and Rainbows (5 - 7). Every unit has at least one
qualified Leader with overall responsibility for the unit and is usually
supported by Assistant Leaders. Most units meet once a week in the evening.
Helpers are vital to guiding and there are recommended ratios of adults to
children, dependent on the age group, so it is vital that units have committed
helpers. If you can help on a regular basis, once a week or fortnight, you could
become a Unit Helper, assisting the unit Leader. Many units have a rota, where a
group of parents, adult family members or other adult volunteers take it in turn
to help at the unit meeting. Just once or twice a term, it's your chance to get
stuck into a wide range of games and activities enjoyed by the girls.
Volunteers are particularly needed in Clifford Chambers, Stratford, Ettington,
Wellesbourne and Tysoe.
There are also many other volunteering opportunities in the local area;
details of these can be found at
